This beloved British teen comedy drama was unafraid to tackle topics that other teen shows shied away from, including substance abuse, teen pregnancy, eating disorders, and mental illness. From the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to a brilliant intro by Fred Segal, music played a key role in this show's emotional effectiveness and long-lasting impact, with fans like myself clambering to download each new track featured. Not to mention, Skins served as a launchpad for the likes of Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult, and Daniel Kaluuya, so if you want their origin stories, start here.
While I'm in my thirties, it remains one of my personal all-time favorites and never stops surprising and delighting me no matter how many times I rewatch. There was briefly an American adaptation, but it's best not to mention that one, as it doesn't hold a candle to the original. The story of a young group of siblings pretty much abandoned by their parents, surviving by their wits - and humor - on a rough Manchester council estate. It's a comedy and drama show with 168 episodes over 11 seasons.
Shameless is no longer running and has no plans to air new episodes or seasons. This beloved animated comedy series features a family so adorable and relatable, you probably know real-life versions of each member. There's also a delightful cast of recurring characters, including the kind but bumbling handyperson Teddy and the wonderfully antagonistic health inspector Hugo, who is always seemingly out to make Bob's life miserable.
It's also one of the longest-running animated series of all time, with a whopping 208 episodes under its belt and a new season on the way, and it may soon even crack the top 10 and join the likes of The Simpsons and Looney Tunes. However, Noah and Alison start seeing each other secretly, and that's when their troubles really begin.
The Affair sometimes takes some engaging narrative turns, with some episodes showing the same situations, but in the eyes and minds of other characters. This narrative shift and the great performances by the central actors make The Affair one of the best Showtime TV shows. Here's a Showtime original series that's a bit on the lighter side but still highly adult. Based on the UK series of the same name, the show focuses on the extended Gallagher family who lives in Chicago.
The father figure, played terrifically by William H. Macy, is always drunk and is usually useless, so his six kids have to hustle and sometimes steal to survive. It's not the ideal family unit, but it is funny to watch these characters as they get into all sorts of different situations. You can watch all of the episodes of this recently concluded series. I can only hope that one day we as a society give Six Feet Under the energy we give that other classic HBO drama about all those dudes in the mob.
In any case, Alan Ball's series follows the lives of the Fisher family, who take over the Los Angeles funeral home that was left to them by their recently deceased father. You may or may not know that Six Feet Under is best remembered for its iconic series finale sequence, but most everything that happens before that is incredible too. The Fisher family is dysfunctional and troubled, and the show is unique for its willingness to have frank, complicated discussions about the many facets of dying and grief.
Like Shameless, Six Feet Under is also interested in the idea that kids are doomed to become their parents, and the ways they struggle to fight against it in preservation of their own identities. While you should probably know before going in that this one is pretty dark , don't let that deter you from watching. Allison Janney was cast as a romantic interest for Frank, but left after taking a job on Matthew Perry's Mr. Sunshine and was unable to be a part of both series. Academy Award nominee Joan Cusack joined the cast as the new Sheila Jackson, along with Emmy Rossum as Frank's sensible and feisty eldest daughter, and Justin Chatwin as a car thief who falls for her. Showtime's Shameless cast also includes Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, Noel Fisher, Steve Howey and Shanola Hampton. Like its predecessor, the American adaptation ran for 11 seasons before the series ended in April 2021, making it the network's longest-running original-scripted program.
Most notably, the role of Stella Gallagher was recast, with Nikita Brownlee playing the character. The fourth series, again consisting of eight episodes, ran between 9 January until 27 February 2007. It featured the biggest cast change in the show's nine-year run, with many characters from the first three series departing and many new characters introduced to replace them. Most notably, the series saw the introduction of the Maguire family as main characters rather than the antagonists that they were in the early series. From Series 4, the Maguires would gradually become the focus of the show during its final years.
Alongside Tina Malone , Sean Gilder and Samantha Siddall , new members of the Maguire family were introduced. Firstly, Ciarán Griffiths took on the role of the homosexual yet homophobic Micky Maguire. Aaron McCusker joined the cast as murderer Jamie Maguire, the oldest of the Maguire children who had been in prison for ten years, whilst Nicky Evans, who appeared in a guest role in Series 3, returned on a regular basis as Shane Maguire.
All the Gallagher family returned, with Annabelle Apsion reprising her role again as absentee mother Monica, which ultimately led to the departure of Maggie O'Neill's character Sheila Jackson. Dystin Johnson as Monica's lesbian lover, Norma Starkey, also returned as a regular cast member. With the introduction of Aaron McCusker as her new love interest, Rebecca Atkinson, who had played Karen Jackson since the first series, became a more prominent character, having been a recurring character during the second and third series. The Karib family also expanded in Series 4, with the arrivals of Kash and Yvonne's children, Chesney, played by Qasim Akhtar, and Meena, portrayed by Sarah Byrne, occurring in this series. The Chatsworth police became a more prominent focus in the series, with Michael Legge and Amanda Ryan portraying young police officers Tom O'Leary and Carrie Rogers, alongside original cast member Warren Donnelly as Stan Waterman.
Produced by Company Pictures for Channel 4, the programme ran for eleven series and aired from 13 January 2004 to 28 May 2013. The show, centred on British working-class culture, was accorded critical acclaim by the British media, including the newspaper The Sun and Newsnight Review on BBC Two. In 2005, the show won Best Drama Series at the BAFTA TV Awards and Best TV Comedy Drama at the British Comedy Awards.
The network Showtime created an American version of the series , which debuted in 2011. You'll need to pick the Movies + HBO plan to get access, which will cost CND$19.98 per month. When Becky Albertalli's debut novel,Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, hit it big, a film adaptation soon followed. Now we have Love, Victor, a spinoff of the film that was, amazingly, the first major Hollywood studio production to focus on a gay teenage romance. It also grossed a whopping $66 million worldwide at the box office. Love, Victor stars Michael Cimino as the charismatic Victor, a new student at Creekwood High School, the same universe in which the book and first film took place.
The show allows Victor to grapple with both his orientation and ethnic identity (he's Puerto Rican and Colombian American) while remaining sensitive and nuanced in its portrayal of marginalized teens. Throughout the series, Victor regularly reaches out to the famed Simon Spier to help him navigate the ups and downs of high school. It may sound angsty, but the breezy rom-com is often anything but, offering a delightfully charming and lighthearted addition to the franchise and teen television at large.
Spinoffs rarely work out, but Frasier is the major exception to that rule, as Frasier Crane has proved to be television's little engine that could. The character was supposed to be on only a few episodes of Cheers as Diane's love interest, but instead, Crane became one of the bar's regulars until the show's end. He then got his own show, which focused on the psychiatrist's move to Seattle to reunite with his estranged father and brother. Frasierended up lasting 11 seasons and remains a fan favorite to this day, so much so that Paramount+ is planning to revive the series for a new season in 2022.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine flew under the radar for its first few seasons, but it eventually grew a dedicated online following and has become the internet's favorite sitcom. In fact, the passion of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's fanbase kept the show alive, since, after it was canceled by Fox, NBC picked up the show in response to the internet's collective outrage. The show's biggest strength is its phenomenal ensemble cast, with everyone working together to strike the exact right blend of goofy humor and shameless sentimentality.
